The Work

What this service covers

Power outages in Waterloo Region are not constant, but when they hit during a January cold snap they hit hard. A standby generator wired through a transfer switch starts within seconds of an outage and runs your furnace, fridge, sump pump and lights without you doing anything. We install Generac, Kohler and Cummins units, sized to your actual load, with the gas line coordinated through a licensed gas fitter.

Common scope

  • Generac, Kohler, Cummins air-cooled and liquid-cooled units
  • Whole-home and essential-circuits configurations
  • Automatic transfer switch installation
  • Natural gas and propane fuel coordination
  • Sump pump and well pump backup priority
  • Annual maintenance and load-bank testing
  • Portable generator transfer-switch installs
  • ESA permit and inspection

Frequently asked

  • What size generator do I need?
It depends on what you want running. Essential-circuits backup (furnace, fridge, sump, a few outlets) usually needs 8-12 kW. Whole-home backup including AC and electric range typically needs 18-22 kW. We do a load survey before recommending a model.
  • How loud are standby generators?
Modern air-cooled units run around 65 dB at the unit, similar to a quiet conversation. We site them in compliance with municipal noise bylaws and recommend placements that minimize what your neighbours hear.
